REPRESENTING YOURSELF/FIND AN ATTORNEY

SELF-REPRESENTED LITIGANTS (SRL)

An individual who appears in court without legal representation is considered “self-represented” or “pro se,” a Latin term meaning “for oneself.” Although you have the legal right to represent yourself, it is strongly advised that you seek the guidance and representation of an attorney whenever possible.

If your case involves criminal charges, you should contact the Public Defender’s Office to determine whether you qualify for their assistance.

The information provided is intended to help individuals without legal counsel understand the general rules and procedures governing civil court cases in Louisiana. It is not an exhaustive guide to the law and does not address every issue or circumstance that may affect your case.

This material is not a substitute for state laws or court rules. Its purpose is to offer general guidance and make the process of self-representation more accessible. Please note that while you have the right to represent yourself, you are responsible for complying with all applicable court rules and procedures.
